Our Story

Retail Sales are no accident in our family! From 1954 when my parents, Sam and Clara Rion, opened the first family shoe store in Georgetown, S.C. where I worked and learned the ropes. Interestingly, 4 out of 5 children ended up in Retail Shoes.  In 1975 after marrying Joey Bunn, we decided to explore retail on our own in Pawleys Island and opened a small shoe store in the Chapel by the Red Door on Hwy 17.

While working with the Lachicotte family and marketing Hammocks, I had some inside knowledge that they were going to open the Row Shops as additional Retail Space in the Hammock Shop Stores. We had first pick of location spaces so Joey moved into a larger area, Pawleys Pedalar, where he built an incredible business for 10 years while I pursued my career selling hammocks Internationally.

In 1983, the Old Schoolhouse became available and everyone agreed that Pawleys Island needed a unique Men's Store. Joey, who always dressed in the style of a Southern Gentleman, decided to take his love of clothes and opened up The Men's Store in The Hammock Shops Village.

In 1988, a customer gave us a tip that the property in front of Oak Lea was going to be developed into four Retail Buildings, and we signed the contract to buy this property. Our good friends, Bill and Eleanor Pitts, had been looking for a location for their jewelry business. Plain and Fancy as well as The Joggling Board were also to be anchors along with Pawleys Pedalar Shoes and Accessories.

Pawleys Island began changing! Frank's Restaurant was just opening, and Woofie and Salters, who owned The Joggling Board, agreed to focus on Frank's and offered to sell us The Joggling Board — and the rest is history. At about this same time, Rob and Amy Bunn became the next generation to follow down the path of Retail. Amy expanded The Joggling Board to a Signature Lilly Pulitzer Shop while Rob and Joey were spearheading the Ladies Shoes and ultimately reopening the Pawleys Island Men's Store.

After Covid in 2021, Rob's son and our Grandson, Rion Bunn also decided to take on an active role in the Men's Store — thus four Generations strong, Retail DNA is in our blood!
